Tourism in Panama is slowly recovering after the lockdowns of the Covid 19 pandemic. The economic impact is especially visible in the country's most isolated areas. One of these places is the Ngäbe-Bugle comarca, an indigenous reserve in Western Panama.

This is the home of the Ngäbe people, the most numerous indigenous people in the country (comprising over 60% of the indigenous population). Insufficient public infrastructure and services continue to be the major issue in these remote areas.

In spite of hardships, local Ngäbe communities are generating opportunities through sustainable tourism in their ancestral land. One of the most spectacular hikes in the country can be done in just a few hours starting near Llano Tugri, the capital of the comarca. In addition to that, agrotourism is up and coming with visits to local farms where tourists can shop for fresh produce and learn about the Ngäbe culture.
